This is because it is a histamine receptor blocker and works at the source of acid production so that less acid is produced by the stomach in the first place. Gaviscon works by forming a protective layer on top of the stomach contents. This protective layer keeps all the stomach contents in the stomach where they work, not letting them seep back up into the oesophagus where they hurt.
